heh, nah. burned that outta my system a long time ago.
if i wanna go hunting i just go to a mates farm up on the tablelands. i was in the army reserve for a little while. watching idiots running around with guns was a little unnerving...
although now you've made me think of it. it's way overdue for me to teach my kids about guns and gun safety.
'fraid I can't agree on this one. Fred's isn't a bad piece but there's an awful lot of stereotypical generalisations presented as fact. There's a whole range of shades of grey in blokes and sheilas that I think he probably deliberately ignores in order to make his point. The Kim du Toit piece reads as good old fashioned hatred and bigotry from my perspective. So now you know my perspective:-)
Phil, Fred does use stereotypes, but to nowhere near the extent that popular (and populist) media in general does to try and denigrate anything that is specifically masculine behaviour. Nor do I see any hatred or bigotry in du Toit's piece. Anger certainly. Reaction to bigotry as well. I too, am angry at a society which is trying to condition me into behaving in a way which is not natural, normal or healthy.
It occurs to me that my last comment could be taken as an attack on gay people, it wasn't. I don't give a rat's blurter about gay people, gay rights, gay marriage or Gai bloody Waterhouse. In fact, I thing Gayness (Gaydom?) is a Good Thing. It removes a large percentage of good looking, witty men from the competition, leaving room for non-performers such as myself. What I was trying to say is that I am getting sick and tired of everything that is considered to be a masculine trait being denigrated and derided. Assertiveness becomes aggression, competitiveness is one-upmanship, protectitiveness is misogony, etc. I'm a man, I like being a man. When I want to get in touch with my femeinine side, I'll get married.
