Handouts and assistance
You know what I hate? Well, probably you know quite a few things I hate, but I've got a newy for you... Red Nose Day.
And Jeans for Genes Day.
And McHappy Day.
And every attention seeking fuckwit who goes on some sort of marathon in a completely unsuitable manner in order to raise money. I've seen (or heard of) people riding penny farthings across oz (via Tony ), people driving graders around Australia - no link for that one, just take my word for it, even people crawling between cities in nappies - again, no link. The list of people doing stupid things so that I will give money to what may well be a very worthy cause is endless.

Here's a message for you, attention seekers, if you want me to donate money to your cause, tell me what it is, who it benefits and exactly where my money will go. If I think you've presented a fair case, I'll dob in a few bucks. If you expect me to shave my melon, wear a red nose, bandanna or other degrading physical adornment; or if you degrade yourself, then you've got Buckley's.
And I want to kill all those dickheads in Koala suits, they're just wrong.
Apart from that , I'm good.

count yourself lucky - just one of the many things that sucks about working in an office is the cheery receptionist / PA / stoopid co-worker who takes these causes on personally. Especially anything to do with getting dressed up in zany attire to attract attention to the themselves. And the cause, of course. That's what is't really all about - the cause. It's not about attracting attention to themselves.
*uhum*
anyway, I HATE getting bailed up by these idiots on blue-bottom day or whatever the cause celeb / dress disaster this week is. I hate even more getting grief and whinges from them when I politely decline to participate or support their cause. They never bother asking whether I choose to give money to other charities, do volunteer work or support an entire bhutanian village*
Like you said Dirk, some of us choose to research and make informed decisions about where our money is going and what it will support, without making a song and dance. Or wearing a stupid fucking hat or a mismatched pair of socks. Get over it people. Oh, and if anyone in my office is reading this - you know who you are.
I work (well, when I work, that is) in the city, and get accosted daily by the rent-a-charity-workers... take thousands of harried office workers with an hour for lunch and a lot of distance to cover, and add to the mix a dozen of these backpacker types who congregate in a spot where foot traffic is forced to converge... they really should get danger money, because when they get in my way, depending on my mood, they need it!! I leave the phone to answering machine from 4pm onwards too.
But I have 3 charities that I donate to monthly. I say that as I brush past them without breaking stride. I cannot be guilt tripped into ANYTHING these days.
I have done the collection thing at work once though. When I worked for the evil multinational I took great delight in harrassing (for my legitimate charity, of course) all the execs as they came through the doors. Tight fisted bunch they were, too. There seemed a direct negative relationship between income and generosity.
Adie, Hooch and Stilt,
I've thought of my theme day for charity. I call it "as you were day".
The idea is that you go about your business exactly as you would on any other day. For the privilege of doing this you donate an amount you are comfortable with to the charity of your choice. Or not, whatever.
I think it'll fly.
