Hey Boss, can I get a sub?

I've heard a couple of rumours recently that the next-door neighbours (Cubbie Station) are selling out. The manager of the place has issued a press release denying a sale, but saying that they are looking into a merger with another family - the Brimblecombes, who are up near St. George.
I wish they were selling out, it seems like a bargain to me. One news story has the price being reduced from $470m to $410m.
I reckon the boss would give me a sub for that.

How big is it? I know the cattle ranches in Arizona are nowhere near as big as the ones you have there in Oz, but they were pretty big. The one that was near my house was 100 sections... 1 section = 660 square acres.

From what I understand, back in the early part of the last century they were in the thousands of sctions. That's a shitload of fence to ride...

It's not thge overall size of Cubbie (approx. 200,000 acres) that is the reason for it's price - it's the irrigation development. They have 40,000 acres of cotton country, with plans to increase this to 75,000 acres. To do this requires water, so they have around 450,000 megalitres of storage capacity, roughly equal to Sydney Harbour. To the best of my knowledge, they have never had full dams.
To put this in perspective, in a good year, with historically averaged prices, they could generate upwards of $80m from the cotton country, plus cereal crops, cattle, etc.

Ok, I see why now.The only thing the ranches in AZ were good for is cattle and mesquite trees.

My metric is a little rusty... megalitres = 1 million liters?

we measure irragation by acre-feet, ie; 100,000 acre-feet, etc...

I don't really understand the whole formula.

But yeah, I can understand you wanting to get your hands on some of that land.

I just did a little mental arithmetic converting metric into US measurement. For an idea of 450,000megs, imagine an NFL ground flooded to a depthe of about five and a half miles,

    Gotcha...

BTW, contrary to popular belief, a lot of us Seppos do know metric... I learned it in the Army where everything is metric...

I'm just a tad bit rusty...

Now, would you PLEASE send me a slab of VB or XXXX?

I'm dying for a REAL beer!
